Frame-by-Frame Animation

Original overview

Carmela is a hand-drawn, frame-by-frame animation created in Adobe Illustrator. Developed from concept and storyboard through voice-over and final artwork, the film follows Carmela, an elf, and a human man who exchange worlds. Each is dissatisfied with their own environment, but the promised escape proves more complicated than expected.

After the exchange, both characters struggle to adapt to the unfamiliar world. The route back has closed, leaving the story suspended between wish fulfilment and entrapment.

Concept

The initial ambition was to keep nearly every frame in motion and connect scenes through designed transitions. The final production narrowed that scope while retaining the core idea: two contrasting worlds reveal pressures of work, social convention, and dissatisfaction through a fairy-tale structure.

Carmela and the human protagonist are not framed as simply good or bad. A book becomes the portal between their worlds, while narration clarifies the exchange. The ending remains deliberately ambiguous: Carmela may have trapped the man, or she may eventually tire of the human world and reopen the passage.

Moodboard

Two visual systems distinguish the worlds. The elf world uses saturated color and rounded forms; the human world shifts toward muted tones, angular architecture, and a more constrained atmosphere.
